Shepherding a podcast to a 230% increase in subscribers (+template)

Impact Audio is a social impact podcast from Submittable. From 2023 to 2025, I served as its producer, managing the team and project through three seasons, 40 episodes, and a 230% increase in subscribers.

Under my tenure, Impact Audio went from an experiment to the central pillar of our content program. We built our content calendar and strategy around our episodes and folded our guests' insights into each blog post, report, and strategy doc.

I included two of my favorite episodes in this portfolio site:

Podcast production is messy. My work was to reduce the "noise" so each team member could focus on their roles: Sam Caplan as host, Laura Steele as writer, and Jordan Marvin as video and audio producer.

So, in addition to setting the overall strategy, I built systems and filled in gaps by creating templates, wrangling reports, stepping in to write, and keeping the guest pipeline full. The treadmill of production can lead to drudgery, so I pushed us all to experiment with different formats and distribution tactics:

  • Dispatches were industry event recaps. These got a lot of engagement from attendees and sponsoring organizations. Here's an example from NGMA 2025.
  • Deep Dives were investigations into deep, existential questions on the industry, like Why don't more people give?
  • Paid LinkedIn promotion on Sam Caplan's posts featuring podcast clips. These were our top-performing paid social ads in my time at Submittable.

The result was a library of compelling, niche content that was a bunch of fun to make. And if you want an under-the-hood look at how it worked, here's a template of the central doc I created to manage production.

P.S. Towards the end of my time at Submittable, I was creating a Claude Project that would make this process smoother. I'm still tinkering that idea, get in touch if you want to swap notes!
